About The Student
Peri has always enjoyed reading. Growing up, she was deeply immersed in books of varying genera and length, so she was able to gain an appreciation for many types of literature. Peri reads in her free time at school very often, but at home she is less inclined to do so. When she was younger, Peri used to read at home, but with age comes more variety in accessible activities. Due to this, her interest in books did not so much dwindle but rather took a back seat to other fun activities, such as making music or playing games.
Now, even though she enjoys books, Peri finds it sometimes hard to focus on a novel. It may be due to lack of interest in the particular book or background noise, but she often loses her place while reading and finds herself being forced to reread pages. She finds this to be a bit frustrating but no deal-breaker; she is never tempted to give up on a book just because she frequently loses her spot.
Another good quality about Peri is that she can find value in nearly every piece of reading. She will finish every book that she begins, even if it is not her favorite. Because she exposes herself to different kinds of books, she is more able to comprehend different aspects of the literature that she is consuming.
Peri is currently reading a book called Wandering Star. She guesses that she has read 10 books over the last year. She read three books at the beginning of the summer- How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Obasan, and The Book Thief. She enjoyed The Book Thief the most out of those three titles. Peri's favorite author is currently Patrick Ness. Her favorite series by him is the Chaos Walking trilogy.
Peri is always surrounded with books. At home, she would hazard a guess that there is between 200 and 300 books easily available to her at any given moment. Because of this, Peri would consider herself to be a fairly quick reader. Although she has some trouble focusing on the text and sometimes has to go over confusing sections a few times, she would say that she is indeed a strong reader as well. She is a reader who can become emotionally invested in a good story. Over the past few years, she has stayed at roughly the same reading level as she does not challenge herself with hard to read texts very often. She prefers stories with more simple language but interesting, action-packed story lines.
Hopefully this will be a very interesting class for her; one in which she can grow both as a reader and writer, but also as a thinker. She is looking forward to having a great year in AP Literature and Composition!
Peri is not a writer. She loves the idea of writing, but every time she sits down to actually write something, she can never think of anything fitting to say. She was never really taught how to write. Instead, teachers would often just tell her that she had to write and leave it at that. She believes that is a crucial reason that she is not much of a writer today, as she feels like people learn to write not only from reading other published literature, but by instruction from someone who knows what they are doing.
She believes that people write for many various reasons. They could have an idea that is too good not to share, they might feel more comfortable communicating through text than words, or they could simply love the way it makes them feel to put words to paper. It is a form of self expression that is very personal to the author. This may appeal to some. Certain people find it difficult to get their points across using their verbal voice, so it may be beneficial for them to use writing as a way to make themselves heard and understood.
To be able to write well, Peri believes that an author must have at least a certain level of knowledge. An author must understand basic sentence structure and capitalization rules before crafting any piece of professional writing. They also must have some idea how to move a narrative along and make it interesting to read. They should know to avoid using the same word over and over again. Peri believes these are very important aspects of writing and being an author.
If she were to write anything, Peri would prefer to write something fictional. She would currently feel the most comfortable writing some sort of realistic fiction, but loves the idea of writing science fiction or fantasy some day. Simple plots and actions are what she deals with best.
Peri decides what to write about through inspiration from the world around her. She may observe a situation where she is curious how it could have worked out had something gone slightly different. She then takes this information and writes it out, changing and adapting certain aspects to fit her desired plot. Sometimes she gets inspiration from dreams or other stories, but this is less common.
When she writes, Peri obviously likes to hear positive feedback. However, polite, constructive criticism can be much appreciated and nice to hear if she is stuck at a certain point in her story or feels like something is wrong but cannot quite pinpoint what the problem is. It is always good to be given ways to improve yourself, and Peri feels that, especially when it comes to writing, she can never stop improving herself.
Peri does not write at home much at all. She rarely writes anywhere. If she were to write something, however, she would so it in her home. One of Peri's biggest problems with writing is she always feels like she is being watched and judged by her peers when she writes in public, so she tends to stay away from doing that. The solitude of her own bedroom is her preferred place for creating, but that opens up the problem of distractions once again.
In general, Peri is not happy with how she writes. She is aware that the only way to improve her skills is to write more frequently, but it is hard for to even start writing for fun because she can be such a perfectionist that she will not even attempt something if it is not perfect the first time she tries it. She is doing her best to overcome these feelings of inadequacy and hopes that this class will be helpful in giving her more confidence in what she creates.
